1884-S Morgan Silver Dollar
1884-S Morgan Silver Dollar
Low-Mintage 1884-S Morgan Silver Dollar
For the first five years of the Morgan Silver Dollar series, millions of coins rolled off the presses at the San Francisco Mint. But after 1882, those mintages dropped sharply. In 1884, for example, the San Francisco Mint struck just 3.2 million Morgans. Compare that to the output at the New Orleans Mint, which struck 9.73 million Morgans that same year. Or the “Mother Mint” in Philadelphia, which struck 14 million Morgans in 1884!
Now consider that as few as 15% of all Morgans struck still exist, and it’s clear to see why the A Guide Book of United States Coins 2020 edition — the so-called “Red Book” — lists a value of an 1884-S Morgan in Uncirculated Mint State-60 (MS60) condition as $7,800, with a Choice Uncirculated MS64 specimen listing at $130,000! That’s why we’re pleased to bring you this example in Extremely Fine (XF) condition. It’s a great way to secure this date without breaking the bank!
COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar — so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan — has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921.
- BIG SILVER COINS – Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a big coin measuring 38.1 mm in diameter.
- CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings.
- EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION – Your Morgan Silver Dollar will come in Extremely Fine (XF) condition with full sharp details and traces of mint luster.
- KEY-DATE COIN FROM THE MOTHER MINT – Struck at the “Granite Lady” in San Francisco, this 1884-dated coin is from America’s “Gilded Age” of the late 19th century and features the San Francisco Mint’s “S” mint mark
- THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence!
